Bravehearts Fly High Over Westfield
Westfield, MA- Late-game hitting earned the Worcester Bravehearts a road victory over the Westfield Starfires Tuesday night at Bullins Field.
The win was the third in a row for the Bravehearts, who are now 5-3. Westfield took an early lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs, an error allowed Johnny Tuccillo to reach first. Brayton Seaburg singled, and Tuccillo would score on an Andre Marrero single to make it 1-0 Westfield. The Bravehearts responded in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally of their own. After Danny Torres of St. Leo singled, NYIT’s EJ Exposito hit a two-run home run to give Worcester a 2-1 lead.
Westfield tied things up in the bottom of the eighth. Leadoff hitter Anthony Porrino was hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Danny Crossen advanced to second on an Eric Callahan sacrifice bunt and scored when Cedric Rose doubled him home.
Worcester, however, would have the last word. With two out in the top of the ninth, PJ Barry (St. Leo) drew a walk. Westfield State’s Nick Martin reached first on a dropped third strike, and Barry would score when Torres singled to right field.
Westfield threatened but was unable to tie the game in the ninth.
Bravehearts starter Eric Chavarria of Lewis-Clark State College pitched four innings of one-run ball, walking three and striking out five. Westfield starting pitcher Nick Dombkowski gave up three hits in 4.1 innings, walking two and striking out six, all while giving up no runs.
Getting the win for Worcester was Alex Amalfi of UMass Boston, going one inning. Amalfi gave up a hit and a walk while striking out one. The loss went to LT Pare, who pitched 1.1 innings while giving up the go-ahead run on a hit and a walk. John West (Boston College) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to save the game for Worcester.
The Bravehearts and Starfires are set for a rematch Wednesday evening when the two teams head to Doyle Field in Leominster. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00.
