Bravehearts

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Bravehearts fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-6 on Thursday night in the first of a two-game series. This makes Worcester’s overall record 31-17, while Vermont elevates to 30-17. Worcester remains the Futures’ League standings leader, a half game ahead of Vermont.

The ‘Hearts took the lead in the second when Michael Florides (Hofstra) doubled to left field, which allowed Jeremy Rosenberg (Anna Maria) to cross the plate. A second run soon followed, when Florides touched home following a ground-out by Matty Warren (Palm Beach Atlantic). This made the score 2-0 into the third.

Vermont soon started their own scoring, when in the third inning Trevor Cohen (Rutgers) scored on a ground-out by Tommy Martin (Yale). The Lake Monsters followed with two more runs in the fourth, both on two singles, respectively. This gave Vermont the lead 3-2 into the fifth.

Vermont continued to score, earning one more run in the top of the fifth on a sac-fly. Worcester tied in the fifth, when Warren and AJ Guindon (Wheaton) scored on a single by Jack Thorbahn (Northeastern). A sac-fly by Daniel Bucciero (Fordham) allowed Tyler Bastunas (Drury) to score, giving Worcester the lead 5-4.

Vermont continued the scoring through the eighth. A sac-fly by Martin brought in a run, tying the game 5-5 in the sixth, and a subsequent run for the Lake Monsters was scored in the seventh, thanks to a solo home run hit off of Kyle McCausland’s (Middlebury) bat. Vermont scored one final run in the eighth, when a double by Martin allowed Cohen to cross the plate, making the score 7-5.  

Worcester added one more run in the eighth, following a sac-fly by Florides, which allowed Bucciero to score. This was not enough to best Vermont, resulting in a 7-6 win for the Lake Monsters.

The winning pitcher was Patric Menk (Virginia), who let up three hits and one run in two innings. The save went to Sean Gamble (Minnesota State), who let up neither a hit nor a run in one inning. The loss went to Nick Choate (Anna Maria), who let up two hits and two runs in two innings.

The Bravehearts will be back at Fitton on Friday, back against the Vermont Lake Monsters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
