Pittsfield, MA – After losing to Pittsfield on Friday night in Worcester, the Bravehearts topped the Suns, 6-1, on Saturday night in Pittsfield to get back to a .500 record.
The game was close for most of the contest thanks to good pitching for both teams. Worcester’s starting pitcher, Patrick Gallagher, fired 6.1 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball and struck out out 10 batters. Pittsfield starter Jonathan Gegetskas tossed 5.1 innings, allowed two runs and eight hits, and struck out four.
The two runs off of Gegetskas were the only two runs for most of the game. In the top of the second inning, Jack Gonzalez hit a homerun for Worcester to give them a 1-0 lead. The four-bagger was the first hit in a Bravehearts uniform for the Stetson product. He finished 1-5 and struck out three times.
Worcester also scored a run in the fifth inning. Derek Adamson singled and advanced to third on a one-out single from Mariano Ricciardi. Alex Gionis followed with a sacrifice fly to give Worcester a two-run lead.
The Bravehearts broke things open in the eighth inning. Michael Dellicarri led off the inning with a homerun. Just one batter later, Mack Cheli was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from Jon Hansen. A strikeout and a fielder’s choice set up first and third with two outs, but an error on Pittsfield second baseman Brian McHale allowed a run to score. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch out of the hand of Jordy Mora allowed another run to score to cap off a three-run eighth inning.
Worcester tacked on another run in the ninth thanks to an RBI-single from Hansen. Hansen finished 2-4.
Michael Dellicarri was the major source of offense for the Bravehearts. He went 4-5 with an RBI. Ricciardi and Alex Gionis also collected a pair of hits.
The Suns scored their only run in the seventh inning. Dave Matthews doubled, reached third base on a fielder’s choice, and scored on a wild pitch.
Pittsfield starter Jonathan Gegetskas has started three games this season, all of which have come against Worcester. The southpaw has lost two of three starts, including Saturday’s decision.
The game was the third time this season that the two teams have played on back-to-back days with one game being played in Worcester and the other in Pittsfield. Worcester won both games in the first pair of games, and the teams have split the last two sets of games.
Worcester travels to Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday and returns home for a 6:30 start on Monday versus Nashua.
